Baghdad (IP): The Iranian foreign minister and the Iraqi president met in Baghdad on Monday and stressed the expansion of relations between the two countries.

Iran PressMiddle East: The two sides discussed regional and international issues, including cooperation between the two countries.

The Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif previously met with the Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein on the very same day.

In a joint press conference with his Iraqi counterpart, the Iranian foreign minister said that he hoped the United States would return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with a sensible policy.

Zarif added: "If the United States returns to the JCPOA, Tehran will take reciprocal measures after verifying the US actions."

Zarif also said: "We thank the Iraqi government for its efforts to create dialogue in the region, and we hope that these efforts will lead to more dialogue and more serious communication in the region."

Stressing his country's role in resolving regional issues, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein said: "Baghdad plays an important role in bringing peace to the region."

He said that he had talked with Zarif about Iran-US relations as well as relations with the Persian Gulf countries and that Iraq's role in this regard was positive.

He added: "In our meeting today, we addressed bilateral issues, important regional issues, and the international situation."

Zarif arrived in Iraq today (Monday) for a two-day visit.

He is scheduled to leave for the Iraqi Kurdistan region tomorrow (Tuesday).
