Vienna (IP) - Iranian deputy foreign minister called the lifting of US sanctions the first step in reviving the Iran Nuclear Deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and said Iran would halt steps to reduce compliance with the nuclear agreement once the sanctions were lifted and verified.

Iran Press/Iran News: The 18th meeting of the Joint Commission, chaired by the EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Enrique Mora, was held today by the High Representative of the European Union Josep Borrell with representatives from China, France, Germany, Russia, UK, and Iran in attendance.

Following the joint ministerial statement on December 21, 2020, the participants considered the prospect of a full US return to the JCPOA and reaffirmed their readiness to address the issue in a positive light and in a collective effort.

Abbas Araghchi, who chaired the Iranian delegation to the meeting, called the lifting of US sanctions the first step in reviving the JCPOA, and said Iran would stop steps to reduce compliance with the nuclear agreement once the sanctions were lifted and verified.

He stated that there was no need for any negotiations for the US to return to the agreement, and the US path in this regard was quite clear, adding just as the United States withdrew from the agreement and imposed illegal sanctions on Iran, it could return to the agreement and end the violation.

In the meeting, the members of the JCPOA referred to the catastrophic dimensions of the US withdrawal from the agreement and stressed not wasting time at this point.

Finally, they reaffirmed their commitment to the nuclear deal and decided to resume the meeting of the Joint Commission next week to continue consultations in Vienna to determine measures to lift sanctions through the relevant expert groups.
