Tehran (IP) - Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman condemned a Belgian court ruling on an Iranian diplomat.

Iran Press/Iran News: "The Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns the sentencing of an Iranian diplomat to 20 years in prison," Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Thursday in response to a Belgian court ruling against Assadollah Asadi, an Iranian diplomat.

The spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs added: "As we have stated many times before, all the steps of Assadollah Asadi's detention, the judicial process and the issuance of the recent sentence were illegal and an apparent violation of international law, especially the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, and the Islamic Republic of Iran does not recognize it in any way."

Khatibzadeh stated: "Belgium and some European countries, under the influence of the hostile atmosphere created by MKO terrorist group in Europe, have taken such an illegal and unjustifiable action."

Therefore, they must be held accountable for gross violations of the rights of Iranian diplomats, including inhumane conditions during their detention in Germany and Belgium, he added.
