Envoy: Iran world's forerunner against drugs

Vienna (IP) - Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative in Vienna in a letter to the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Organization noted that Iran remained a forerunner in the fight against drugs at the global level.

Iran PressEurope: 'Kazem Gharibabadi' in the letter also criticized the inaction of relevant international organizations and countries in the practice of their joint responsibility in supporting counter-narcotics programs and called for correcting this approach of not taking action.

In this letter, he wrote: "More than 1147 tons of various drugs were discovered by Iran in 2020 with the efforts and sacrifices of soldiers and law enforcement officers at the borders and inside the country, which shows a growth of 41% compared to the previous year."

The envoy added: "The highest amount of these discoveries is related to opium with 916 tons, the amount of seized other drugs was 107 tons of hashish, 27 tons of morphine, 31 tons of heroin, 20 tons of Methamphetamine, and 44 tons of other substances."

This diplomat said that in 2020, Iran's anti-narcotics officers had 2851 armed clashes with drug traffickers, which led to the destruction and disintegration of 2196 gangs and the transit distribution network of narcotics. In these clashes, 10 Iranian agents were also martyred.
