Assassination of Gen. Soleimani by US, example of state terrorism: Speaker

Tehran (IP) - The Speaker of the Parliament said that the assassination of General Qasem Soleimani by the United States is an example of organized state terrorism, a clear violation of the national sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Iraq and a violation of the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iran PressIran news: Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf in an official message on the occasion of the martyrdom anniversary of Gen. Soleimani to a number of Speakers of regional and world parliaments, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Secretaries General of the Assembly of Asian and Islamic Assemblies and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the terrorist act of the US government and stressed the efforts of the parliaments of the world and the international community in the fight against terrorism.

He added: "General Qasem Soleimani paid a visit to the Republic of Iraq at the invitation of the Iraqi government and in order to continue the advisory assistance of the Islamic Republic of Iran in fighting terrorism (ISIL) in Iraq through a civilian and open flight to Baghdad. He was the target of a US missile attack after an official reception at Baghdad Airport." 

The Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly stated: “This senior military official of the Islamic Republic of Iran in recent years as the highest military adviser of the Islamic Republic of Iran along with the armed forces and the Iraqi government played an important role in the fight against terrorism in this country. Strongly condemning the US government, this blatant terrorist attack took place in a situation where there was no state of war between Tehran and Washington. It is a fight against terrorism and poses no serious and immediate threat to the US government."

Ghalibaf noted in the letter: “The Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran condemns this action as an example of organized state terrorism, a clear violation of the national sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Iraq and a violation of the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This terrorist act, which is contrary to the UN Charter, especially the international conventions, has seriously damaged the international community's efforts to fight terrorism, the rule of law in global relations, and regional security and peace. And it has seriously endangered international security."

He added: "Your Excellency is expected to take responsibility for the role of parliaments and international fora in promoting world peace and stability and the fight against terrorism, especially state terrorism, and to provide the necessary legal grounds to prevent the recurrence of such terrorist catastrophes."
