Driving the news:
Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported that an Israeli drone fired two missiles at an excavator operating along the Kfardounin–Deir Kifa route in the Tyre district. The strike destroyed the vehicle and left one person dead at the scene.
Why it matters:
The attack highlights Israel’s continued disregard for the ceasefire deal reached in November 2024, and underscores rising concerns in Lebanon that Tel Aviv seeks to prolong instability in the border region. Hezbollah has repeatedly warned that any Israeli aggression will prompt a response, stressing that the resistance movement remains committed to defending Lebanese sovereignty.
The big picture:
The truce, mediated after more than a year of cross-border clashes, was intended to halt hostilities that erupted in October 2023 and escalated into a full-scale Israeli offensive by September 2024. That campaign left over 4,000 people dead and around 17,000 wounded, most of them Lebanese civilians.
Under the terms of the agreement, Israel was required to withdraw all its forces from southern Lebanon by January 2025. However, it has only partially pulled back and continues to occupy five military outposts along the border.
State of play:
Despite the ceasefire, Israeli drones and artillery have repeatedly targeted southern Lebanese villages, causing civilian casualties and material damage. Hezbollah has described the ongoing attacks as proof that Tel Aviv is not committed to peace or stability in the region.
