Why it matters:
The ongoing genocide in Gaza has fueled anger in Europe, prompting UEFA to ban Israel from football competitions over its crimes in Gaza. UEFA suspension could influence FIFA’s stance, raising the stakes for Israel’s international football presence.
The big picture:
ٌWhlile a number of European countries —and most of the world — have recognized the State of Palestine, the U.S. and Israel continue to insist on full occupation of Palestine. The Israeli-U.S. policy has also spilled over to the sports arena.
State of play:
While Russia has been banned from participation in many international competitions because of the Ukrainian war, the U.S tries to pave the way for Israel's participation in all sports arenas, despite the regime's attacks on several countries, including Syria, Lebanon, Iran, and Yemen.
What we're hearing:
Reports say that the majority of the 20 members of UEFA's executive committee support the move.
