About 80% of United Nations General Assembly member states have recognized the State of Palestine, as Israel presses its war in Gaza and expands settlements in the occupied West Bank.

France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, and Monaco announced recognition during today’s UNGA session. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said recognition was “imperative,” warning that Palestinian self-determination was being erased.

Tens of thousands marched in more than 80 Italian cities after unions called a nationwide strike in solidarity with Gaza.

Despite new recognitions, Israel’s ground offensive around Gaza City has forced the closure of two hospitals, according to aid groups and the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The Israeli military says over 300,000 people have fled the city since evacuation orders were issued.
