Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Irish counterpart, Simon Harris, met on the sidelines of the annual United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday. They discussed bilateral relations between the two countries, with Harris expressing satisfaction over the reopening of the Irish embassy in Tehran and hoping it would enhance ties between the two nations.

Why it matters:

This meeting underscores the ongoing diplomatic efforts between Iran and European nations, particularly regarding regional stability. The reopening of the Irish embassy signifies a potential thaw in relations, which could foster increased cooperation.

The big picture:

The week-long General Assembly meeting, which began on Tuesday, will continue until September 29. Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian, is also in New York to deliver an address and outline Tehran’s position on key international issues.

The meeting between Araqchi and his Swedish counterpart took place as part of a series of planned meetings between the Iranian delegation and  officials from other countries.

What he is saying:

Araghchi articulated Iran's stance on nuclear issues, emphasizing the unprecedented nature of the U.S. attack on Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities during the negotiations.

He stated, "The illegal U.S. attack on Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities amid negotiations is an unprecedented assault on diplomacy."

He also criticized the shifting positions of the three European countries and the unreasonable demands made by some Western parties, asserting that such actions contradict their stated commitment to diplomacy.

Key points:

  • The reopening of the Irish embassy in Tehran is regarded as a positive development for bilateral relations.
  • Discussions covered regional and international developments, with a particular focus on Iran's nuclear program.
  • Araghchi called for realism, independence, and responsibility from all parties involved to achieve a diplomatic solution.
