Speaking at a UN General Assembly summit on Monday afternoon, Guterres welcomed recent decisions by several countries to recognize Palestine, stressing that “nothing can justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.”
Responding to criticism, he emphasized that Palestinian statehood “is a right, not a reward,” warning that without it, there will be “no peace” in the region.
At least 50 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza yesterday, bringing the death toll in the enclave to more than 65,000, according to the Gaza health ministry.
Britain, Canada, Australia, and Portugal formally recognized Palestine yesterday, while France also announced its official recognition.
