The big picture:
Since the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, the Israeli military has repeatedly violated the agreement by conducting military incursions into Lebanese territory, resulting in casualties among Lebanese civilians. The ceasefire monitoring committee has so far taken no effective measures to stop these attacks.
Recent escalation:
On Thursday, Israel launched several extensive airstrikes across different areas in southern Lebanon, further escalating tensions.
Lebanese response:
President Joseph Aoun condemned the Israeli attacks as a “blatant violation” of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, criticizing the silence of the ceasefire monitoring countries as a dangerous shirking of responsibility that encourages Israeli aggression. He urged immediate action to halt Israel’s clear violations of Lebanon’s sovereignty.
What he's saying:
Nabih Berri, Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, called Israel’s attacks a violation against Lebanon’s sovereignty, its army, and UNIFIL peacekeepers. He held the international community, especially the United States, responsible for failing to prevent these Israeli aggressions.
Berri stressed that these Israeli violations present an opportunity for all Lebanese factions to unify their positions against attacks that threaten the entire country.
