Why it matters:
The vigil in Accra highlights growing global solidarity with Palestinian journalists killed in conflict zones. It underscores Ghana’s civil society engagement in international human rights advocacy and amplifies calls for accountability amid rising concerns over press freedom and war crimes in Gaza.
The big picture:
The Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), in partnership with the Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG), organized a candlelight protest in Accra to honor over 200 Palestinian journalists reportedly killed by Israeli forces in the past two years. Activists, students, journalists, and civil society groups lit candles and observed moments of silence in tribute.
What they’re saying:
Lyla Adwan-Kamara of the BDS Movement in Ghana condemned Israel’s use of the “double tap” strike tactic, which she said targets rescue efforts and has killed journalists and critically ill patients. “This was a strike on hospitals, which is a war crime,” she said.
Palestinian Ambassador Abdul Fatah Ahmed Khalil Alsattar thanked President John Mahama and the Ghanaian people for their support, stating: “Israel killing journalists means they want to kill the truth.”
Kwesi Pratt of SMG declared: “Whatever happens, Palestine will be free. We, the journalists and people of Ghana, stand solidly with Palestine.”
What’s next:
The protest concluded peacefully, with participants reaffirming their commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of journalists in conflict zones. Organizers say future actions will continue to spotlight media repression and advocate for Palestinian rights.
