International activist Greta Thunberg, holding a press conference with other pro-Palestinian activists on Sunday ahead of the Global Sumud Flotilla’s departure, emphasized Israel’s actions in Gaza over the mission itself.

Why it matters:

The flotilla includes activists from several countries, European lawmakers and public figures such as former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau, as well as Greta Thunberg herself. Organisers called it the largest solidarity mission yet, after the Israeli regime blocked the two previous attempts.

  • The event highlights growing international scrutiny on the Israeli regime’s war and blockade of Gaza, where the people are dying because of either bombardment or starvation.

Background:

In June and July, Israeli forces seized two activist boats—Madleen and Handala—trying to take humanitarian aid to Gaza. The vessels carried activists from over a dozen countries, including Greta Thunberg. All passengers were detained and later expelled.

The big picture:

  • Activists from 44 countries are set to sail from Spanish ports toward Gaza, aiming to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza intensified since October 2023.

  • This follows a June incident where Israeli forces seized a similar flotilla carrying Thunberg, labeling it a “propaganda stunt” against the Israeli regime.

What Tunberg's saying:

What to watch:

Israel’s response to the flotilla may add to the global uprising and awareness.
