Khaf-Herat railway great achievement for Iran, Afghanistan: MFA spox

Kabul (IP) - Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman said that the completion of the Khaf-Herat railway between Iran and Afghanistan is a great achievement for the two countries.

Iran PressIran news: In an interview with IRNA on Thursday, Saeed Khatibzadeh said the Khaf-Herat railway line connects Afghanistan to Europe via Iran and will facilitate many trade routes for merchants.

He said that the railway will lead to sustainable development in the region, pointing to the fact that currently, there are many tracks in the joint borders of the two countries either awaiting entries or having problems with traffic.

As with the transportation project, Iran's Minister of Road and Urban Development Mohammad Eslami said on Wednesday that the Iran-Afghanistan railway will be connected in less than a month in the presence of high-ranking officials of the two countries.

The 'Khaf-Herat' railway is under construction in four sections with a length of 191 km, of which 77 km is inside Iran and the other 114 km is inside Afghanistan.

About 77 km of the project is on Iran's soil and the rest in Afghanistan.

Iran, enjoying appropriate capacities to transfer energy to South and East Asia through its maritime routes, can be an important gateway for great eastern economic partners like India and China.

The railroad project ensures Afghanistan's access to free waters and European markets.
