Tehran (IP) - The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) stressed that the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons has reached the quorum required to enter into force, i.e., it has been approved by 50 countries and will enter into force on 22 January 2021.

Iran PressIran news: Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), or the Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty, is the first legally binding international agreement to comprehensively prohibit nuclear weapons with the ultimate goal being their total elimination. It was adopted on 7 July 2017, opened for signature on 20 September 2017, and will enter into force on 22 January 2021.

The treaty passed on schedule on 7 July with 122 in favor, 1 against (Netherlands), and 1 official abstention (Singapore). 69 nations did not vote, among them all of the nuclear-weapon states and all NATO members except the Netherlands.

This treaty is considered non-discriminatory in comparison with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and at the same time, the scope of the obligations of the members in this treaty is wider.

The main goal of the founders of this treaty is to challenge the legitimacy of nuclear weapons and to put pressure on nuclear powers to achieve the goal of universal nuclear disarmament worldwide.

Under the pretext of the NPT, the nuclear powers believe that their nuclear weapons are legal and do not allow this right to other countries in the world.

Nuclear countries and NATO (nuclear-armed) countries have boycotted the talks and are pressuring other countries to withdraw. They believe the new treaty undermines the NPT and nuclear safeguards.

The Islamic Republic of Iran participated in the negotiations in line with the principled policy of supporting international efforts to completely eliminate nuclear weapons in the world, as well as with the aim of influencing the drafting of a treaty in the national interest and achieved success in including its views in the text of the treaty and voted in favor of the treaty.

At the same time, the Islamic Republic of Iran has stated in a statement that it will not change its legal obligations and political positions as a result of participating in this conference until it makes its decision to sign the treaty, and will support the goals of the treaty politically.
