UN (IP) - Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations (UN) said on Tuesday that the United States has violated the binding rule of lifting some of its unilateral sanctions against Tehran, ordered by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Iran PressIran News: Iranian Ambassador to the UN Majid Takht Ravanchi pointed to the US use of sanctions as a tool of its foreign policy, saying: “These sanctions have directly and indirectly targeted Iranian companies and the Iranian people and affected Iran's ability to trade freely".

“The United States is bound by the court, and any non-compliance is subject to international responsibility,” Takht Ravanchi said, noting that the court has asked the litigants to refrain from actions that would aggravate or expand the dispute. He added: "It is clear that US wrongdoing gives rise to its international responsibility."

The United States has so far ignored the binding rule of the International Court of Justice and imposed even more sanctions such that recently, amid the coronavirus outbreak, more Iranian banks were sanctioned.

The issue has hampered Iran's access to drugs and equipment needed to fight the coronavirus, he stressed.

On October 3, 2018, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) reviewed Iran's request and ordered the United States to lift sanctions on humanitarian, pharmaceutical, agricultural, and aviation items, but Washington ignored the binding rule.
