The UN secretary-general's special representative for Syria in a meeting with the Syrian foreign minister said that the only solution to the crisis in Syria is the political track, and it is possible to implement the Security Council resolution in a way that it would meet the aspirations of the Syrian people.

Iran PressMiddle East: The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Syria Geir Pedersen held a meeting with the Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem to discuss important issues, including the economic situation, the Syrian Constitutional Review Committee and the refugee-related affairs.

According to the official Syrian News Agency (SANA), during Pedersen's meeting with al-Muallem in Damascus, the two sides stressed the success of the Constitutional Review Committee's process on the future of Syria.

Pederson and al-Muallem said that this requires a commitment to the agreed-upon actions, especially non-interference in the working process of the committee, as well as not setting a timetable for it from outside.

Pederson also said that eight years of war is a very long period which has caused a lot of suffering for the Syrian people, and is currently accompanied by a deteriorating economic situation in light of coronavirus outbreak.”

During the meeting, the Syrian foreign minister detailed Damascus' efforts to hold an international conference on refugees' condition on November 11th and 12th and criticized the West for its role in disrupting the return of Syrian refugees under false pretenses.

Al-Muallem expressed Syria’s readiness to cooperate with Pedersen to facilitate a political solution.

The Syrian foreign minister said that the political process, including talks over a new constitution, should be led and owned by Syrians.

“The constitution and all matters related to it are a sovereign issue that should be decided by Syrians themselves without any foreign interference,” al-Muallem said.

The third round of talks of the Syrian Constitutional Committee concluded at the end of August in Geneva.
