Iran congratulates Luis Arce's victory in Bolivia elections

Tehran (IP) - Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman congratulated the Bolivian people and the electorate on holding the Bolivian presidential election in a peaceful atmosphere with a massive turnout of the voters.

Iran PressIran news: Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said that Iran welcomed the returning of democracy and power to the Bolivian people after a tense year.

Khatibzadeh added that while congratulating Bolivian President-elect Luis Arce, Iran expresses its full support for the elected government and readiness to resume cooperation and strengthen friendly ties with the country.

In Sunday's Bolivian presidential election, Socialist Party candidate Luis Arce, a former economy minister under Evo Morales, won the election with more than 52 percent of the vote, which was a crushing victory over centrist rival Carlos Mesa.

Exiled former president Evo Morales on Monday signaled his intention to return to Bolivia after Arce's victory

Morales resigned on November 10 after losing the support of the armed forces in the midst of the crisis that left 36 dead and hundreds wounded.
