Iran, Afghanistan set high goals for Khaf-Herat railway

The Iranian and Afghan road ministers discussed the details of the opening and operationalization of the Khaf-Herat railway.

Iran Press/Iran news: Iran's Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mohammad Eslami, and  Acting Minister of Transportation of Afghanistan, Mohammad Yama Shams discussed the details and different aspects of the opening and operation of the Khaf-Herat railway on Wednesday, October 7, 2020, via video conferencing.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed the operational method, financial issues, insurance services, manpower training, freight and passenger transportation, customs, technical and security issues.

For his part, Eslami emphasized the need to pay attention to the details and aspects of the talks and the contract for the operationalization of the Khaf-Herat railway, stating: "High goals can be established for this railway line."

The Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development added: "The construction and operationalization of this railway line is not everything; rather, it is the starting point and the cornerstone for the development of strategic relations, the blessings of which will reach the two friendly and neighboring nations."

The 139-kilometer Khaf-Herat railway is a single-lane road connecting Khaf in Khorasan Razavi province to Herat, Afghanistan's second most populous city.
