Vienna (IP) - Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran's ambassador and permanent representative to the Vienna-based international organizations, called Israel's acquisition of nuclear weapons a severe threat to regional and global security and stability.

Iran PressEurope: Explaining Tehran's position on the nuclear-weapon-free Middle East, Gharibabadi stated that Israel and its supporters are deliberately violating all international norms and regulations by ignoring legitimate regional and global concerns about its refusal to adhere to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Referring to the 50th anniversary of the NPT and expressing regret that the treaty is still a long way from globalization, the senior Iranian diplomat added: "Ignoring such an important issue affects regional and international peace and stability directly."

Recalling the prominent role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in implementing the decisions and resolutions of the General Conference, Gharibabadi stressed: "Political considerations should not influence the Agency in this regard, and professional logic requires the Agency to take measures to implement safeguards throughout the Middle East."
