Iran Press/ Iran News: "75 years ago today, the US gained the infamy of becoming the 1st and ONLY user of nuclear weapons. And against innocents," Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a tweet on the anniversary of the first atomic bomb attack.
"Today, US & Israeli nukes threaten our region. It's long overdue to end nuclear nightmare & the #MAD doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction," he added.
The US dropped its first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, destroying the city.
By the end of 1945, around 140,000 people — mostly civilians, around 40% of the city's population prior to the attack — had died either in the blast or as a result of after-effects.
The US dropped a second bomb three days later on the southern city of Nagasaki, estimated to have claimed 74,000 lives in 1945 alone. Japan declared its surrender just days later on August 15, 1945.
