The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Iraq met with Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Sistani, the country's most prominent Shiite cleric, in Najaf Ashraf.

Iran Press/Middle East: According to the Iraq News website; Jeanine Hennis Plasschaert, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Iraq, arrived in Najaf on Sunday to meet with Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Sistani at his home to discuss important issues of Iraq.

During the meeting, Ayatollah Sistani, referring to the need for transparency, justice, and broad participation of the people in the Iraqi election process, called early elections a way out of the political, economic, and security crises in the country.

Emphasizing the need to fight corruption, increasing the efficiency of government and governing institutions, maintaining Iraqi sovereignty, and preventing foreign interference in the country, the Iraqi Shiite Authority called for countering enemy conspiracies that aim to divide and destabilize Iraq.

Jeanine Hennis Plasschaert, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Iraq, also said that Ayatollah Sistani is highly valued by the United Nations, adding that delaying elections or holding them without providing all the necessary conditions will pose a great danger to Iraq

The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Iraq also met with Ayatollah Sistani on November 11, 2019.
