US failure in extending Iran arms embargo, result of changes in international relations: Zarif

Tehran (IP) - Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif cited the recent failure of the US in the UN Security Council to extend Iran's arms embargo as a result of changes in international relations.

Iran Press/Iran News: Zarif on Monday evening in his speech on the series 'World in Transition' on 'Iran and global change' said: "The current situation in the West is such that they can no longer manage all events and happenings around the world as before. Hegemony is not only no longer desirable, but also impossible.”

Recently, a US draft resolution on extending the arms embargo on Iran failed to get the required number of votes to be adopted by the UN Security Council.

He said almost all countries in the Persian Gulf region, except Iran and more recently Iraq, suffer from the shortcomings and poverty of democracy, and their people's participation in determining their own destiny is minimal.

At the beginning of his speech, Zarif pointed to some miscalculations by countries in the region, including Saddam's invasion of Kuwait and the siege of Qatar by some of its neighbors.

Zarif said: "Almost all countries in the south of the Persian Gulf have land disputes and competition with other neighbors. In addition, the Arab countries are in conflict with other non-Arab countries, which has included not only Iran but also Turkey.”

In expressing the challenges of the Persian Gulf region, he also referred to sectarian tensions, which, along with the other challenges mentioned, are in the form of "old discourse".

Demographic imbalances and natural resources, as well as the distribution of wealth, are other challenges in the Persian Gulf region that Zarif mentioned.
