Tehran (IP) - Head of Iran's Presidential Office said that the public threat to impose sanctions on countries that oppose the US and do not accompany it is a dangerous innovation in the international system and the Security Council.

Iran Press/Iran news: In a reaction to the recent remarks of the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Mahmoud Vaezi stated: "The US government, influenced by the extremist approach and will of the Zionist regime makes decisions that are completely illegal and irrational, so it cannot even adhere to the apparent legal basis of these decisions."

Emphasizing that the use of the "snapback" is a mechanism within the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the head of Iran's presidential office added: "The US government, in irrational behavior, has officially withdrawn from Iran's nuclear deal and it is clear that it can no longer use the mechanisms within this agreement."

Vaezi in an interview with "President.ir" said: ‌"Of course, the US government has realized today what a great mistake it has made by withdrawing from the JCPOA, and now, to cover up this mistake, they are making desperate moves without any legal basis. It has tried the approach several times since withdrawal, and each time has faced global opposition in an unprecedented way.

The chief of Iran's presidential staff cited US unilateralist policies as the basis for its isolation in the world, adding: "The fact that the Americans, who claim to be the world leader, have suffered such isolation and, in fact, this indicates Iran's legitimacy."

"The Americans do not have the right to use snapback mechanisms; therefore, their recent action in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will not succeed at all as all UNSC members and the international community oppose it," he said.

"The threat to impose sanctions on countries that oppose and do not accompany the United States is a dangerous innovation," Vaezi stressed.

Following the failure of the United Nations Security Council to adopt a draft resolution to extend the arms embargo on Iran, and despite its withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the US tried to invoke the 'snapback mechanism' for resuming sanctions, this is while the US is not considered as a member anymore.

The US decision to try invoking the snapback mechanism was strongly opposed by members of the United Nations Security Council recently.

On Tuesday, May 8, 2018, US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the international agreement and announced the return of nuclear sanctions, in violation of Washington's commitments under the JCPOA.

Trump's move has drawn widespread domestic and international condemnation.
