Tehran (IP) - The Vice President for Legal Affairs Laya Joneidi stated that the Iranians' rights must be pursued, both in domestic and international communities.

Iran Press/Iran News: On the sidelines of the weekly cabinet session on the 26th of August, Laya Joneidi in an exclusive interview with IranPress stated that the Legal Vice President of Iran has always tried to pursue the rights of the Iranian people in international communities.

The vice president for legal affairs of Iran noted that there is no doubt that the US invasion of Iraq in January 2020 to assassinate Lt. Gen. Qasem Soliemani was a criminal act.

In this context, Iran must use all its capabilities to pursue the case of the assassination of General Soleimani at eligible communities, Joneidi stressed.

Lt. Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the late commander of the IRGC's Quds Force, who arrived in Iraq on January 3 at the official invitation of Iraqi officials, along with Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy head of the Iraqi People's Basij (Al-Hashd al-Sha'abi), and eight others were martyred in an airstrike near Baghdad airport.

Earlier this month, the UN Special Rapporteur, Agnès Callamard condemned again the assassination of Lt. Gen. Qasem Soleimani in a report, calling it a violation of international laws.

The Vice President for Legal Affairs Laya Joneidi in another part of her remarks highlighted that when the US withdrew from the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) and has imposed sanctions, Iran filed a lawsuit in the International Court of Justice, and in the upcoming days, a meeting to qualify that complaint will be held.

Therefore, wherever Iranian rights are discussed, the necessary follow-ups should be done in the judiciary, in the political communities, and in the councils that are in charge of ensuring human rights, noted Laya Joneidi.

The president of the UN Security Council, Indonesia, said on Tuesday it was “not in the position to take further action” on a US bid to trigger a return of all UN sanctions on Iran because there is no consensus in the 15-member body.

Thirteen council members expressed their opposition on Friday, arguing that Washington’s move is void given it is using a process agreed under a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers that it quit two years ago.

Under the JCPOA, the state parties - Russia, the US, the UK, China, France, and Germany - can trigger a snapback mechanism to reimpose sanctions on Iran if Tehran violates the deal. Washington left the JCPOA in 2018.

In early August, the United States once again accused Iran of violating the nuclear deal and announced plans to restore UN sanctions on Tehran. On August 20, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo notified the United Nations that Washington was initiating the process to reinstate all UN sanctions on Iran. The US believes that the sanctions may come back into effect in 30 days.
