Global COVID-19 cases exceed 21.6 million

There are over 21.6 million confirmed COVID-19 cases globally, with over 768,000 fatalities and more than 14.3 million recoveries, according to the latest tally from Johns Hopkins University.

Iran Press/America: The US has seen over 5.3 million infections and more than 169,400 deaths – both numbers are the highest in the world.

As of Friday, the Chinese mainland had recorded 84,827 cases with 319 asymptomatic patients under medical observation. The death toll stood at 4,710, including 69 fatalities from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and seven from the Taiwan region.

The country recorded 19 new cases on Saturday, with 15 from overseas and four domestically transmitted. 

Russia started manufacturing its vaccine for COVID-19, Interfax news agency reported on Saturday. Russia has said the vaccine, developed by Moscow's Gamaleya Institute, will be rolled out by the end of this month.

South Korea tightened coronavirus measures on Saturday in Seoul and its surrounding areas as the country reported the highest number of new daily infections in more than five months.

India has recorded more than 2.5 million COVID-19 cases as of Saturday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said three COVID-19 vaccines are in different stages of trials in the country.
