Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab has announced the resignation of the government.

Iran PressMiddle East: "We are with people in calling for trying those responsible for the Beirut blast," Lebanese prime minister said in a televised speech on Monday.

He added that the Beirut explosion was a result of endemic corruption.

Diab also said, "we are with the people in calling for trying those responsible for this crime" as he spoke at the presidential palace on Monday evening.

Demonstrators had demanded political change after an explosion in Beirut killed more than 160 people and injured around 6,000 last week.

Lebanon's health minister Hamad Hassan had earlier confirmed the government had resigned when he spoke to reporters after a cabinet meeting on Monday.

The cabinet has been under increasing pressure after several ministers quit or expressed their intention to step down in recent days.

Hamad said: "The whole government resigned."

Diab's cabinet now assumes a caretaker role until a new government is formed.

The resignation came in the wake of a massive explosion in the port of Beirut that killed at least 160 people and injured nearly 6000 others, and about 20 remained missing, according to the health ministry.
