Major General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri, Armed Forces Chief of Staff

Tehran (IP) - Commemorating Mersad Operation against US-backed MKO, Iran’s Armed Forces Chief of Staff said the lessons of the imposed 8-year-war against Iran reproduces insight in the society against the enemy's plots.

Iran Press/Iran news: Major General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri referred to MKO terrorist group (Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization or MEK) as the last link of the world arrogant powers to break the resistance of Iran in the last point of its 8-year-sacred-defense and said the terrorist group backed by the then-time Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was defeated due their strategic mistake and illusion, and the readiness of the Iranian forces.

Major General Bagheri noted that the US-backed MKO terrorist group still is plotting against Iran in making riots in the country by airing black propaganda against Iran through cyberspace, yet they face the vigilance of the Iranian nation.

While reproducing vigilance and insight in the society, the lessons from the 8-year-imposed-war can protect the country from the conspiracies and seditions of the enemies and guarantee its redemption in the critical point of the future, the Iranian commander noted.

July 27, 1988, is the anniversary of the Mersad Operation carried out jointly by Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) and Army against US-backed MKO terrorist group on the western borders of Iran.

Mersad Operation was launched on July 27, 1988, in Kermanshah province, western Iran, to counter an attack by MKO terrorist group backed by Saddam Hussein of the Iraqi Baathist Regime.

Iranian forces successfully by surrounding a large number of attackers in the Pataq Strait (or Mersad) after three days of fighting, finally defeated the MKO terrorists.

More than 4,800 members of the MKO terrorist group were killed and wounded in the operation.

The MKO has carried out numerous terrorist attacks against Iranian civilians and government officials since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979. Out of the nearly 17,000 Iranians killed in terrorist attacks over the past four decades, about 12,000 have fallen victim to MKO's acts of terror.

Washington and the European Union have removed the MKO from their lists of terrorist organizations. The anti-Iran terrorists enjoy the freedom of activity in the US and Europe and even hold meetings with American and EU officials.
