Iran Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN office in Geneva Esmail Baqaei Hamaneh

Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN office in Geneva said the US criminal and illegal act of assassinating Lt. Gen. Qasem Soleimani has put the global peace and security at risk.

Iran PressEurope: Esmail Baqaei Hamaneh who attended the 44th meeting of the UN Human Rights Council on Thursday said that the United States must be held accountable for the assassination of the late Commander of Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Lieutenant General Qasem Soleimani.

Baqaei Hamaneh called the assassination of the Iranian top commander as "state terrorism," saying that  L.t Gen. Soleimani lived like a hero and yet remains a nightmare for his assassinators. 

Emphasizing that the US crime is a violation of international law, the UN Charter, and human rights rules, the Iranian envoy noted that the UN Rapporteur's report on the assassination of Lt. Gen. Soleimani is unchallengeable. 

In this regard, the UN Rapporteur Agnès Callamard said the US' assassination of the late Commander of Qods Force of the IRGC is a violation of international laws and remarked that the extension of the war on terror damages global peace and security.

The late Commander of Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Lieutenant General Qasem Soleimani, who had traveled to Iraq on the official invitation of the Iraqi officials, was assassinated by the US drone attack in Baghdad on January 3, 2020, along with the second-in-command of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis as well as eight companions.
