Iran Press/ Europe: According to a statement published on Thursday, the female activists who were arrested on May 15, 2018, had been peacefully advocating for years for the right of women in the kingdom to drive, as well as broader reforms related to the repressive male guardianship system.
“It is heartbreaking that two years have now passed with these brave women still behind bars,” the statement added.
Amnesty International’s Middle East Research Director Lynn Maalouf also said that many Saudi women human rights activists were physically and mentally tortured in prison. And many of them, although released, are still on trial on charges related to their peaceful activities.
Currently, due to Human rights activities, 13 female activists are under Saudi courts’ trial from whom 5 are in detention, the statement said.
Since Mohammad bin Salman was appointed as the Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince, political, civil, and religious activists were put under more pressure such that since September 2019 dozens of clerics, college professors, artists, and female activists have been jailed under different pretexts.
