One killed, 33 injured after 5.1 earthquake hits capital

Tehran (IP) - One person was killed and 33 others were injured, when a magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit northern Iran early on Friday, according to the spokesman of Iran's Emergency Services Organization.

Iran Press/Iran news: Mojtaba Khaledi said in Tehran and Alborz Provinces one person died and 23 others injured while trying to escape from the tremor.

A 60-year-old man killed when he was trying to escape from tremor in Gilavand where 6 others injured as the same result.

All the casualties from the earthquake are due to panic after the incident.

Later, the Head of Iran's crisis management organization, Ismail Najar put the number of injured people at 33 and added that most of the injured discharged from hospitals.

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale occurred near Damavand at 00:48 local time on Friday which was felt in Tehran.

After earthquake people huddled in the streets of Tehran in the middle of the night, as they tried to escape from the tremor.

According to Tehran University's Geophysics Center, the earthquake occurred seven kilometers underground six kilometers from Damavand, a city in the eastern capital, at 35.78 latitudes and 52.05 longitudes.

At 1:34 a.m local time, two aftershocks with a magnitude of 2.5 occurred.

Following the 5.1 earthquakes which hit Tehran Province, all Emergency units are on full alert ready to do service with the observance of health protocols.

The head of Iran's EMS Pir-Hussein Kolivand said that the special operations team is present and ready at the epicenter of the earthquake.
