Tehran (IP) - Iran's police forces have discovered 703 tons of narcotics this year (which started on 21 March), the country's anti-narcotics Police Chief has confirmed.

Iran PressIran news: Responding to the question of Iran Press reporter on the sideline of the annual meeting of anti-narcotics police commanders on Monday over the anti-narcotics Police actions in fighting drugs, Brigadier-General Masoud Zahedian said: "The Police have been doing two kinds of activities in their fight against drug trafficking; corrective and preventive actions. Firstly, we are working on preventive measures, stopping people from becoming addicted to narcotics and increasing public awareness of drugs and narcotics and the dangers which they pose."

Zahedian added: "We have also tried to guide families and organizations to collaborate with us in the fight against drugs and eventually we increased the level of social collaboration in this matter which is one of our priorities."

In further remarks, the senior official said: "As far as our preventive actions are concerned, the anti-narcotics police has taken many steps to fight against drug smuggling and distribution network inside the country and on the borders.   

He said collaboration between institutes, organizations and police, and non-stop effort has led to the discovery of over 703 tons of different kinds of drugs inside the country in the current Iranian calendar year (starting 21 March). He said this represents an 18 percent increae compared to the same period last year.

He added the amount of drugs that have been discovered is unprecedented in any country and represents a new world record for the Iranian police.
