Arak (IP) - The secondary circuit of Iran's Arak nuclear reactor became operational on Monday at a special ceremony attended by the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI).

Iran Press/Iran News: Ali Akbar Salehi attended a press conference in the Arak pressurized Heavy Water facilities on Monday and announced the start-up of the secondary circuit of Iran's Arak nuclear reactor and the circuit became operational in his presence.

"One of the major achievements of the Islamic Republic in the field of nuclear technology is the design and construction of the Arak's Heavy Water Reactor Facility," Salehi said while attending to the ceremony of the secondary circuit of Arak nuclear reactor, central Iran.

He added: "It is a valuable technology that our young scientists started about 20 years ago with Russia's contributions and have made great progress today."

Ali Akbar Salehi noted: "If we divide the set of actions to be taken in this reactor into 52 systems, almost 20 of them are completed, 18 systems are in operation and the rest are under contract and hopefully completed by the next Iranian year (1399)."

He also explained that the reactor consists of two parts; interactions occur in the primary part, which is the heart of the reactor; the heat generated in the primary part must be removed and transferred to the cooling towers and environment which would be done by the second circuit of the Reactor.

Modernized Arak Heavy Water Research Reactor has been designed with the aim of gaining experience and know-how in the design and construction of nuclear reactors, training of personnel, research and development (R&D) facilities in the fields of neutron physics, thermohydraulics and treatment, and radioisotope production for use in medical, industrial and agricultural fields.

The reactor was redesigned by a team of experts to the highest international standards.
