UAE drones attack the Libyan city of Misrata

Drones belonging to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) bombarded Misrata -- a city in northern Libya -- on Sunday night.

Iran PressAfrica: The Libyan government of national accord said in a statement that United Arab Emirates UAVs targeted Misrata Air School. Following the attack, Libyan government air defences responded by firing artillery shells at the intruding drones.

The United Arab Emirates is a major supporter of the so-called Libyan National Army, led by a rebel General, Khalifa Haftar, whose forces have dominated eastern Libya for several years with the support of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates and a number of Western countries.

Haftar's forces have advanced northwards in the past few months. On 4th April 2019, the rebel General, Khalifa Haftar ordered his troops to attack Tripoli, the capital of Libya -- a move which was widely condemned by the international community, including the United Nations.

Since the start of the attack, more than 1,000 Libyans have been killed in Tripoli and at least 5500 more injured.

Since the 2011 revolution that led to the overthrow of ousted dictator, Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has suffered from political violence and instability, with warlords controlling swathes of territory throughout the country.

For the past four years, Libya has had two parliaments (Tobruk Parliament in the east and Tripoli Parliament, Libyan capital) and two armies, due to conflicts between parties and groups.

The Tobruk parliament is backed by the Libyan National Army commanded by the Khalifa Haftar, and the internationally-recognised government of Fayez al-Sarraj, a government of national accord, is based in Tripoli. 207/211/219
