China and the United States are in close communication on trade, its commerce ministry said, declining to comment on possible retaliatory steps if Washington imposes more tariffs on Chinese goods this weekend.

Iran Press/ Asia: China and the United States are in close communication on trade, its commerce ministry said on Thursday (December 12), declining to comment on possible retaliatory steps if Washington imposes more tariffs on Chinese goods this weekend, Reuters reported.

The United States is due to impose tariffs on almost $160 billion of Chinese imports such as video game consoles, computer monitors and toys on Sunday (December 15).

Beijing has said it would retaliate if the United States escalates the trade dispute.

"The two sides' economic and trade teams are maintaining close communication," Gao Feng, spokesman at the Chinese commerce ministry, told reporters at a regular briefing.

Gao reiterated that as announced last week, China would waive import tariffs for some soybeans and pork shipments from the US.

Washington's trade war against Beijing emerged after the US President, Donald Trump, in line with protectionism, began a war on trade with China since June 2018 by imposing new customs tariffs on trade with the country and completed the move on May 10, 2019.
