Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met and held talks with Secretary General of European External Action Service Helga Schmid on Saturday morning in Tehran.

Iran Press/Iran news: At the meeting co-chaired by Araghchi and Schmid, the two senior politicians discussed the latest developments regarding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, US unilateral sanctions on Iran, and Tehran's reaction to stop doing some of its commitments as per Articles 26 and 36 of the JCPOA.

Meanwhile, a parallel meeting of experts of Iran and the European Union was held in addition to Araqchi's meeting with Helga Schmid, Mehr News Agency reported.

Helga Schmid arrived in Tehran after he paid a visit to the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Qatar.

On Wednesday, Helga Schmid referred to the Iran nuclear deal, also known as JCPOA, as a key pillar of security in the region, saying that she would meet and hold talks with Iranian officials on the status of JCPOA and the activation of EU's proposed trade mechanism for Iran, INSTEX.

Following the US' withdrawal, the foreign ministers of the remaining signatories to the JCPOA agreed to create to launch the European channel for transactions with Iran, called INSTEX. The mechanism is yet to become operational. 

In the previous weeks, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and Japan's Prime Minister Abe Shinzo met with Iranian officials and conferred on the JCPOA, as well as Iran-US tension.101/213
