Following the tweets of the French ambassador to Washington, Iran Foreign Ministry summoned the newly appointed French Ambassador in Tehran Philippe Thiebaud.

Iran Press/Iran news: France’s newly appointed ambassador to Iran, Philippe Thiebaud On Sundey afternoon, submitted a copy of his credentials to Iran’s foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif at the Iranian foreign ministry in Tehran.

However, only hours after his appointment, ambassador Thiebaud was summoned by the head of Iran’s JCPOA secretariat, Seyyed Hossein Meydani. The action was in response to earlier comments by France's ambassador to Washington, Gerard Araud who tweeted on 13 April that “It’s false to say that at the expiration of the JCPOA, Iran will be allowed to enrich uranium.”

Taking up the role of France’s top diplomat in Tehran, Thiebaud was French ambassador to the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reported Iran Press.

He was also France’s ambassador to Pakistan from 2011 to 2014 and to South Korea from 2005 to 2009.

Earlier on Wednesday 6 March 2019, the French embassy in Tehran announced that Thiebaud would start his new job in the coming week.

Former French ambassador to Iran, Francois Senemaud returned to France earlier to become the French president Emanuel Macron's special envoy to Syria.103/211/203
