UN aid for flood victims arrives Tehran

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has announced that the organization's aid for Iranian flood victims has arrived in Tehran.

Iran Press/America: The shipment consists of 1,000 tents and other welfare items to be distributed in coordination with the government, among the flood victims.

United Nations Representative to Tehran Ugochi Daniels traveled to Lorestan province on Wednesday to visit flood-affected areas and assess the amount of damage in the province.

On this two-day visit, Daniels will visit the flood-hit areas of Pol-e-Dokhtar, Mamulan and Khoram Abad cities.

Exceptionally heavy rains since March 19 have flooded some 1,900 cities, towns, and villages, killing 70 people and causing hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of damage to Iranian agriculture, leaving aid agencies struggling to cope.

States of emergency have been declared in several provinces and tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has ordered the Armed Forces to join the national rescue and relief operations.

Many people, as part of voluntary groups as well as non-governmental organizations, have been participating in the efforts to ensure speedy recovery in areas that incurred the most flood damage. 103/211/213
