China threatens to retaliate against Britain over Hong Kong

China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian has said that Beijing reserved the right to respond against Britain's interfering with the Hong Kong Issue.

Iran PressAsia: Speaking in a news briefing, Zhao Lijian said that Britain would "bear all the consequences" of any moves China decides to take.

British prime minister Boris Johnson said on Wednesday that a new national security law imposed upon Hong Kong by Beijing was a "clear and serious breach" of the handover agreement through which the city was returned to China after 150 years of British colonial rule.

Johnson emphasized that the UK will now open up visa restrictions for all Hong Kong citizens born before the 1997 handover, potentially offering a route to citizenship for up to 2.9 million people.

Earlier, the Chinese embassy in London said in a statement: “If the British side makes unilateral changes to the relevant practice, it will breach its own position and pledges as well as international law and basic norms governing international relations. We firmly oppose this and reserve the right to take corresponding measures."

The United Kingdom and the United States are among the countries that have always been involved in Hong Kong's internal affairs.

Hong Kong was under British rule from 1842 to 1997 but joined China in 1997.

Hong Kong has a population of 7,230,000 and is one of the most important financial and commercial markets in Asia. 207
