The United States has ordered China to close its Houston consulate, Beijing said Wednesday, in what is called a "political provocation" that will further harm diplomatic relations.

Iran Press/America: "China urges the US to immediately withdraw its wrong decision, or China will definitely take a proper and necessary response," said foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin, adding they were told Tuesday the consulate would have to close.

The US State Department says China's Houston consulate closed to protect American intellectual property.

"We have directed the closure of PRC Consulate General Houston, in order to protect American intellectual property and American's private information," Ortagus said in an emailed statement.
