Iran Press/Asia: Chinese State Councilor, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday that the United States has been stirring up tension in the South China Sea, adding that China was strongly opposed to US intervention in the South China Sea.
Wang made the remarks when co-chairing the 12th meeting of the China-Vietnam Steering Committee for Bilateral Cooperation with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh via video link. Wang said China appreciates Vietnam's role as the rotating chair of ASEAN.
He called on countries in the region to be on high alert.
ASEAN, a regional bloc comprising 10 Southeast Asian nations, aims to promote intergovernmental cooperation and facilitate economic integration among its members.
It was established in August 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. The group later expanded to include Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam.
