Voting has started in Zimbabwe’s election, where more than 12,300 polling stations were scheduled to open at 7 am local time (05:00 GMT) and are set to close at 7 pm (17:00 GMT).

Iran PressAfrica: Voters will cast ballots at more than 12,300 polling stations open for 12 hours starting at 7 am local time (05:00 GMT) and closing at 7 pm (17:00 GMT).

Al Jazeera’s Haru Mutasa, reporting from Harare, said that early turnout at one polling station in the capital was “pretty decent” in an election where voters are focused on the economy.

“The real main issue here is poverty, and the economy, and the high cost of living,” Mutasa said.

“Living in Zimbabwe is tough. There are times when prices of basic goods just go up every week,” she said.

“People just want whoever wins this election to address all these needs because ultimately, regardless of who you support, people say they just want the economy to turn around quickly.”

Approximately 6.6 million Zimbabweans have registered to vote in a more than 15 million population.
