Washington has received the green light to rejoin United Nations’ heritage, cultural and science body Unesco, a move expected to open yet another front for US-China rivalry – this time over setting the global rules on artificial intelligence (AI).

Iran PressSci & Tech: Observers said the US would push back on increasing efforts by China to mold Unesco policymaking on emerging technologies, which is deemed important in shaping global regulations.

A US proposal to rejoin the body was adopted on Friday, with “a very large majority” of the 193 member states voting in favor, according to a Unesco statement.

Apart from paying its back dues, the United States has also agreed to fund 22% of UNESCO's budget and contribute to programs that increase access to education in Africa among others.
