IP - UN special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian affairs hailed the government of South Africa for asking the International Court of Justice to investigate Israel for genocide.

Iran Press/ West Asia: Francesca Albanese has commended the government of South Africa for asking the International Court of Justice to investigate Israel for genocide.

South Africa initiated proceedings on Friday against Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding violations of its responsibilities under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

According to the application, “acts and omissions by Israel…are genocidal in character, as they are committed with the requisite specific intent…to destroy Palestinians in Gaza as part of the broader Palestinian national, racial and ethnic group.” The African country added that Israel violated its obligations under the Genocide Convention.

Francesca P. Albanese Italian international lawyer and academic appointed United Nations Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories for a three-year term on Saturday in a post on her X page wrote: “I encourage other member states to make meaningful submissions and contribute to save lives,” she said adding that "The survival of an entire people is on the line."

The ICJ, sometimes known as the World Court, is the United Nations' venue for resolving disputes between states. Israel’s foreign ministry said in a reaction that the suit was “baseless.”
