UN member states demand equitable access to future COVID-19 vaccines

The 193 members of the UN General Assembly on Monday adopted by consensus a resolution that calls for 'equitable, efficient and timely' access to any future vaccines developed to fight the Coronavirus.

Iran PressAmerica: The resolution also highlights the 'crucial leading role' played by the World Health  Organization, which has faced criticism from Washington and others about its handling of the pandemic, the Hindu reported.

The resolution calls for strengthening the scientific international cooperation necessary to combat COVID-19 and to bolster coordination, including with the private sector.

Recently, in a letter to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Iran, Russia, China, Cuba, North Korea, Iraq, Venezuela, and Nicaragua’s envoys said that unilateral sanctions which are against international law have made it difficult for the countries to fight the Coronavirus.

With the sanctions, national governments' ongoing efforts to combat the Coronavirus are undermined, particularly with regard to the effective and timely provision of medical supplies, including test kits and medicines needed to treat patients, the letter said, stressing that the anti-Corona campaign needs the highest level of solidarity and cooperation.
