Moscow (IP) - In a clear signal of enduring cooperation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov affirmed that the evolving political landscape in Syria will not impact the strategic partnership agreement between Russia and Iran.

Iran Press/Europe: Lavrov stated that the agreement, described as "comprehensive, long-term, and all-weather," is finalized and ready for signing.

Speaking on the potential ramifications of Syrian opposition forces assuming power followong the fall of President Bashar al-Assad, Lavrov dismissed the need for amendments. "The new 'big' agreement, the text of which has long been ready and agreed upon by the parties, is comprehensive, long-term and 'all-weather' in nature and in this sense does not require any adjustments," he said. Both Russia and Iran were key allies of Assad during the fight against ISIS terrorists.

The agreement is set to formalize the "unprecedented progress" in bilateral ties that Moscow and Tehran have achieved in recent years, elevating their relationship to a strategic partnership, Lavrov explained.

"Of course, such a comprehensive document also has an international component," Lavrov noted, emphasizing its broader implications. "Among other things, it pays special attention to strengthening interaction in the interests of peace and security at the regional and global levels, and sets forth Moscow and Tehran's desire for closer cooperation in the areas of security, defense, the fight against terrorism and extremism, and countering many other common challenges and threats."
