Aliakbar Gharibshahi of Iran snatched a gold medal in the men’s up to 107kg category at the 2024 Paralympic Games on Sunday, setting a new Paralympic record with a lift of 252kg at the La Chapelle Arena in Paris.

Mongolia's Sodnompiljee Enkhbayar secured the silver medal with a lift of 248kg, while Mexico's Jose de Jesus Castillo took home the bronze with a lift of 222kg.

In addition to Gharibshahi's victory, another Iranian heavyweight powerlifter, Ahmad Aminzadeh, is set to compete in the men’s over 107kg category later in the day.

With Gharibshahi's gold medal, Iran currently ranks 17th in the Paralympic medal table, boasting a total of seven gold medals. This achievement not only highlights Gharibshahi's talent but also underscores Iran's growing prowess in powerlifting on the international stage.

As the Paralympic Games continue, all eyes will be on Aminzadeh as he aims to add to Iran's medal tally and uphold the legacy of the nation's powerlifting athletes.
