Upper Karabakh – also known as Nagorno-Karabakh, has been controlled by ethnic Armenians since it broke free of Baku's control after a fierce war in the early 1990s that killed 30,000 people.
The armed forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia have recently clashed again, killing and wounding several soldiers allegedly belonging to both sides.
Baku and Yerevan separately accused each other of starting the conflict.
