Iran Press/Iran news: Head of the Department of Environment Isa Kalantari told reporters in Tabriz on Monday that the water transfer tunnel to Lake Urmia will be completed in the next six months, and therefore, the lake's water volume will reach 14 billion and 700 million cubic meters in the next seven years. Therefore Lake Urmia will be revived after some years.
He further stated, "With the transfer of water from Zab, Pasveh dam and Urmia and Tabriz treatment plants, about one billion cubic meters of water will enter the lake permanently annually."
He stated that "One of the most important factors in reviving Lake Urmia is a 40% reduction in water consumption in the agricultural sector. Contrary to initial assumptions that water reduction was thought to lead to a reduction in production, according to the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad, there has been a 17 percent increase in crop production in the lake's drainage basin."
Shared between West Azerbaijan and East Azerbaijan provinces in northwestern Iran, Lake Urmia, was once the largest salt-water lake in the Middle East. It was home to many migratory birds and indigenous animals including flamingos, pelicans, egrets, ducks, and attracted hundreds of tourists every year who had bathed in the water to take advantage of the therapeutic properties of the lake.
All domestic and foreign experts believe that participation of local communities along with the implementation of different projects has an important role in reviving Lake Urmia.
