Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi

Tehran (IP) - Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman described the US President's letter to the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General as a "vain attempt at the wrong time."

Iran Press/Iran news: Seyyed Abbas Mousavi wrote in his Twitter account on Wednesday: "As global health is at stake and we need global solidarity and science-led leadership more than ever, Trump's letter to WHO Director-General is undermining the professionalism and independence of the organization."

"It is a vain attempt at the wrong time," Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman added.

US President Donald Trump threatened to permanently pull funding from WHO and 'reconsider' US membership a few hours ago while accusing the WHO of failing to act independently from China.

Donald Trump addressed the WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a letter, writing: "It is clear the repeated missteps by you and your organization in responding to the pandemic have been extremely costly for the world. The only way forward for the World Health Organization is if it can actually demonstrate independence from China."

"My administration has already started discussions with you on how to reform the organization. But action is needed quickly. We do not have time to waste," Trump wrote, adding that the US would reconsider its membership unless unspecified improvements are made," he said.

US President's letter to the World Health Organization comes while more than 1,573,000 active patients are in the country, and the death toll from the coronavirus has risen to 93,652.
